We are proud to announce our selection as a grant recipient in a national partnership between Family Promise and HUMI, a Washington state-based nonprofit working with communities to fund and create programs helping families facing housing crises.

The model is based on the shared beliefs of the two organizations that a combination of case management, opportunity, and community can empower the families we serve toward self-sufficiency. The mission of the partnership is simple: to ensure children are Homeless No More.

Family Promise of Greater Wichita is one of ten Family Promise Affiliates selected for the fourth cycle of grants through HUMI.

Here’s how it works: Each participating Affiliate receives a $20,000 Homeless No More Challenge Grant from HUMI over two years ($10,000 per year) to launch a program aimed at sustainable prevention and rehousing for families experiencing homelessness. Each Affiliate must raise an initial $10,000 before HUMI awards their $10,000 grant. Further, the Affiliate is then expected to engage the community and match the funds with another $20,000 in the following year. This double challenge match is designed to reinforce a self-sustaining habit of contributions from the community going forward.

32 Family Promise Affiliates have received HUMI funds since 2016, serving more than 2,121 families, including 4,809 children.  Together, the HUMI Grant matching model, along with community donations in the 32 locations, has raised over $2.4 million to assist families with stable housing.

“Because of our partnership with HUMI, we have prevented thousands more families from experiencing homelessness or were able to help them achieve housing more quickly,” said Family Promise CEO, Claas Ehlers.

Our Executive Director, Stacia Thompson, says, “These HUMI funds fill an unmet resource need in the Wichita area.  Our goal at Family Promise of Greater Wichita is to ensure that children have safe, stable housing so the ability to intervene before they lose their established housing is invaluable, especially right now with so many people facing eviction and job loss due to the pandemic. The ability to provide this type of assistance couldn’t be more timely.”

Help Us Move In Executive Director Sarah Scherer is enthusiastic about the two organizations working together. “Help Us Move In is pleased to continue the successful partnership with our unique matching program assisting Family Promise Affiliates across the country, knowing that there will be fresh hope towards housing stability for struggling families in 20 new locations,” she said.

Clayton, a national home builder of site-built and off-site built homes, is also joining this partnership for the first time and is underwriting portions of the grant for several participating Affiliates.
