Meet Irene Mendez: A Passion for Supporting Families
At Family Promise of Greater Wichita, we believe in the power of relationships to create lasting change. Our newest team member, Irene Mendez, brings that belief to life every day as our Family Advocate for Stabilization Services. In her role, Irene works closely with families who have graduated from our programs, ensuring they continue on the path to sustainable independence while finding belonging and support along the way.
For Irene, this work is deeply personal. Growing up, she had a positive experience with a social worker during a challenging time, which sparked her passion for helping others. “I can’t change the world,” she says, “but I can change someone’s life.” That mindset has guided her journey, leading her to three years of experience as a foster parent and several years in the field of social welfare.
Born in California, Irene moved to Wichita at age 13 and is now a junior at Wichita State University, pursuing a degree in social work. Her goal is to be able to support children and families in need. She already has strong ties within the social services community—having worked previously with Jaraya Reynolds, FPGW’s Shelter Services Advocate!
When Irene first learned about Family Promise, she was surprised by the breadth of support offered to families. What stands out most to her is the wraparound services we provide—more than just housing assistance, but deep, ongoing relationships that empower families for the long haul. It’s not just about getting help; it’s about feeling supported.
A natural at understanding others and putting herself in their shoes, Irene recognizes that no one likes to ask for help. That’s why she leads with compassion and connection, creating a space where families feel heard, valued, and equipped for stability.
“We are thrilled to welcome Irene to our team. She brings valuable experience and a deep commitment to empowering families as they do the hard work of building stability. With a balance of encouragement and accountability, she will walk alongside families, offering the support they need to move forward with confidence.” – FPGW Executive Director, Dawn Epp
Outside of work, Irene loves traveling and embracing new experiences. She’s visited Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Whether she’s exploring new places or relaxing on the beach, she carries with her the belief that, “the world is really big, and you only live once.”
We are thrilled to have Irene on our team, walking alongside families as they build a brighter future. Welcome to Family Promise, Irene!
